More And More People Every Year Willing To Ignore Fact That Golf Is Stupid
JUPITER, FL — With the number of players increasing significantly in the past few years, it’s becoming clear that more people than ever are willing to overlook the fact that golf — a sport that entails repeatedly hitting a tiny ball with different sticks — is fundamentally stupid.
Data from the National Golf Foundation estimates that 26.6 million people played a round of golf last year, an astounding figure when considering that to do so, players have to whack away at a dumb little ball until it ends up in a hole hundreds of yards away.
The industry expects the number to be even higher this year as the sport continues to attract new enthusiasts, including record numbers of youths, women, and minorities, who seem content to ignore its glaring flaws.
“It’s a great way to spend a Saturday,” said Emma Riverside, who took up the sport in 2021 and has spent over $9,000 on golf shoes, golf-specific clothes, greens fees, and a set of golf clubs that honestly looks just as good as the cheap ones that they have at driving ranges.
Even more surprising than the fact that people spend hours chasing a tiny ball around manicured lawns, often in sweltering heat or pouring rain, is that many millions more consume golf-related content, whether at live events, on TV, or on social media.
“It’s baffling,” said sports psychologist Edward Kline. “I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to get a good tee time for this absolutely ridiculous sport.”
